Super Nintendo World coming to Universal Studios Japan in 2020

Here we go! (To the Amusement Park)

Universal Studios Japan has released additional information on their previously reported deal with Nintendo and the creation of the theme park to debut just in time for the Tokyo, Japan Olympics in 2020 via a News Release today. Officially called the ‘Super Nintendo World‘, the theme park will be the first oficial Nintendo attraction in the World.

Universal Studios Japan released information on the location and cost of the expansion. The Super Nintendo World will be built using current parking space as well as an area designated for future expansion. The project itself is projected to exceed 50 billion Yen (over $434.41 million U.S. dollars), which makes it evident that Universal Studios Japan is banking on Nintendo to provide the ultimate experience.

The reveal of the name brings new light on how Nintendo is wanting to portray its brand to a world-wide audience. Earlier this year Nintendo not only remodeled its store in New York, but changed its name from ‘Nintendo World‘ to ‘Nintendo New York‘. It seems that the rebranding is to eliminate possible confusion when it comes to the stores and theme park attractions, and that this is something that has been in the works for longer than anticipated, as the initial story about Universal and Nintendo‘s collaboration broke back in May of this year.

Super Nintendo World is targetted to open in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Japan is very invested in this possibility, as showcased on the Rio Olympics closing ceremony, with Japan’s Prime Minister going so far as appearing dressed in a Mario costume.

Katsuhiro Miyamoto (no relation to Shigeru Miyamoto) who is a professor at Kansai University, projects that Super Nintendo World will bring an economic boom to the area, with approximately 6.2 trillion Yen for the Kansai region, 11.7 trillion Yen for Japan, and will create approximately 1.1 million jogs in Japan within 10 years from opening.

Super Nintendo World is also planned to open in Universal Parks and Resorts Orlando and Hollywood, but no specific date has been given.
